Facts About Red lake
Red Lake is a census-designated place within the Lower Red Lake unorganized territory located in Beltrami County. Home to the federally recognized Red Lake Band of Chippewa, it is the only “closed reservation” in Minnesota. What that means is, all land is held in common by the tribe and there is no private property. Red Lake is one of the largest lakes in the state and 16th largest in the country, sitting at 107,800 acres. It is well-known for both ice and crappie fishing.
According to the anglers who visit Red Lake on a regular basis, it’s fairly common to lure in 40-inch long northern pikes on the lake.

It is southeast of Bemidji, located mainly within the Leech Lake Indian Reservation, and completely within the Chippewa National Forest. Of particular interest are large expanses of hardstem bulrush and common cattail bordering the north and west shoreline. This lake in Itasca County supports a diverse sport fishery which includes good populations of walleyes, yellow perch, northern pike and black crappies. Spring is the best season to catch fish due to the fish being hungry after the long winter, being more active due to warmer waters and laying their eggs near shore.
