State Parks Near Birmingham

Cathedral Caverns State Park

The first feature most people notice about Cathedral Caverns is its massive entrance. The huge opening measures 126 feet wide and 25 feet high, a possible world record for commercial caves. The grand entrance is only the beginning. Inside the cavern are some of the most beautiful formations Mother Nature has ever created including “Goliath”- one of the largest stalagmites in the world measuring 45 feet tall and 243 feet in circumference.

Cathedral Caverns features many amazing sites:  a “caveman” perched atop a flowstone wall, a “frozen” waterfall, a large stalagmite forest and a most improbable stone formation – a stalagmite that is 27 feet tall and 3 inches wide!  The cave maintains a comfortable 60 degrees temperature all year round. In addition to cave tours, Cathedral Caverns State Park also features gemstone mining, a popular activity for any age.

Oak Mountain State Park

Topping it all off is the park’s stunning physical landscape, which alone makes for an unforgettable experience.

Naturalist programs, educational opportunities, and avian rehabilitation are major components of the park as well. The Alabama Wildlife Center provides rehabilitation services to injured native birds each year in order to return them to the wild. The resident birds can be viewed from the Tree Top Nature Trail, an elevated boardwalk winding through a secluded woodland valley.

Blue Springs State Park

This park may be a secret swimming hole to the locals, but it is well worth the drive from anywhere in the state. While Blue Springs is a great summertime spot, it is welcoming year-round. If you are looking for a place to slow down and enjoy some peace and quiet, this is it!

The park’s main attractions, the swimming pools, are fed by a crystal-clear underground spring that remains a cool 68 degrees year-round. The spring pumps 3,600 gallons of water per minute into the dual octagonal sandy-bottomed pools. Once over the spillway, kids can search for critters among the rocks in the shallows before it flows into west fork of the Choctawhatchee River.

Bike ride around the park or just get lazy in the sun before your next dip. Ready for lunch? Bring a picnic or visit Hagler’s Barbeque across the street from the park office. There are several pavilions with picnic tables or just spread out a blanket in the park’s many green spaces and enjoy. The pavilions are also available to rent for almost any occasion. Hiking trails have been created and are now active.
