Camping in California is an amazing experience and the natural wonders of the state attract millions of visitors each year. Here are some of the best RV campgrounds and RV-friendly State and National parks in California you should vacation at next!

  • Mojave National Preserve
  • Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks
  • Joshua Tree National Park
  • Yosemite National Park
  • Redwood National Park

Mojave National Preserve

The famous Mojave Desert is well known throughout the United States and is part of the unique xeric desert biome. The national preserve stretches across large parts of Southern California and into Nevada. The area is one of the most well-preserved ecosystems in the US and borders the San Andreas fault. There are rare springs like the Ash Meadows and Oasis Vally that make for great hiking destinations. Because the area is so large, you have a lot of choices when it comes to campsites.

Camping is first-come, first-serve. So, make sure to reserve your RVnGO RV rental and camping spots ahead of time. There are two developed campgrounds: Mid Hills and Hole-in-the-Wall. There are available year-round and come with amenities such as vault toilets, trash receptacles, fire rings, and picnic tables. Each campsite can accommodate 1 to 8 people. Larger groups will need to make reservations for the group campground at Black Canyon. Both developed sites are $12 per site per night or $6 per site per night for pass holders.

There are also undeveloped campsites that do not have any amenities (beyond potentially a fire ring) that you can camp at. With an RV, you can carry more supplies and enjoy a longer stay at these campsites. However, many of these areas are not RV accessible. If you decide you want to rough it out in nature with your RV rental, then make sure the campsite you choose is RV friendly by contacting the park ahead of time.

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks

As you may have noticed, these are more than a single national park. Sequoia & Kings Canyon is the consolidation of Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park. Both parks are under the same management and provide a combined 1,315 square miles of beautiful natural wonder. The park is located in Tulare County, California, and features a variety of scenic and unique geographical locations.

Keep in mind that there are no RV hook-ups for RV camping at the parks. However, RV camping is welcomed, and you are allowed to use generators between 9 am to 9 pm. There are no dump stations, except for at the Princess Campground in Sequoia National Forest near Hume Lake. Dump stations are only available during the summer months. Make sure to review campground rules for vehicle length and more to better prepare for RV camping at these parks.

Many campsites allow RV camping and come with amenities unlike some of the others on this list. The national park was once a national monument and is known for the Joshua Tree, which is native to the Mojave. The park is also known for its high elevations with most sites sitting some thousands of feet above sea level.

Pets are welcomed but must remain on a leash and must not be left unattended.

Yosemite National Park

Spanning four counties and 759,620 acres in the Yosemite National Park. The park is one of the most well cared for and popular parks in the United States. It is one of the less fragmented ecosystems in the Sierra Nevada and hosts a variety of plants and wildlife. Millions of people visit the park each year for its amazing scenery and unique, ancient geography. RV camping for travelers in California visiting the park is welcomed, though reservations are necessary. Do not come to the park to stay overnight without first securing a permit. Reservations are open and there are no first-come, first-serve campgrounds.

Electrical, water and sewer hookups are not available in Yosemite. However, dump stations with fresh water are available at Upper Pines Campground year-round, near Wawona Campground (summer only), and near Tuolumne Meadows Campground (summer only). The maximum RV length is 40 feet and the maximum trailer length is 35 feet. There are eight sites of this size are available (six sites in Lower Pines and two in North Pines, which are open spring through fall). Most sites exist in Yosemite Valley and elsewhere accept RVs up to 35 feet or trailers up to 24 feet.
