Tailgate Tips For Super Bowl 2023
Mark your calendars! Super Bowl 57 will be happening on Sunday, February 12, 2023, in Phoenix, Arizona. And what a perfect location to enjoy the whole experience from the comfort and convenience of Super Bowl Tailgating in an RV rental! Phoenix, Arizona, is already a fantastic place to visit in an RV. But if you’re hoping to throw a Super Bowl tailgate party with a few friends or enjoy a quiet afternoon’s grilling with the game on the radio, Phoenix is second to none. In this article, we help you plan for an awesome tailgating event.
Here are some of our top tailgate tips for Super Bowl 2023!
It’s All About Location, Location, Location!
Choose your tailgating location wisely! You want to find the perfect location. However, the ideal location depends on what kind of tailgate party you want. Stadium parking is a great place to start if you want to be close to the action. But there are other options out there that you may like better.
Firstly, pick a place with easy parking. Navigating an RV isn’t the easiest of tasks at the best of times. Make sure you aren’t getting yourself stuck somewhere just for the sake of a good spot. Parking at the stadium can be expensive and not always available due to capacity or ticketing restrictions. An off-site location might, therefore, be better. If you end up settling on an off-site location, pick one where you can stay for the night if you plan to drink. Like most states, Arizona takes drunk driving very seriously.
A middle-ground solution is to choose a more flexible parking spot that is still close to the stadium. This means people don’t have far to walk when they head in for kickoff and after the game is over (or even during halftime). You might even consider reserving a block of spots in a parking lot (if possible). Doing so will give you plenty of room on either side of your RV to put out tables and chairs and to keep your grill a safe distance from your vehicle!
Don’t forget, if you aren’t comfortable having a lot of people use your RV’s bathroom facilities, you will need to park somewhere where it’s not far for people to walk to the nearest restroom. Remember, kids may need to visit more than adults.
Make a DIY Party Station
No Super Bowl tailgating party is complete without a custom DIY party station. The good news is that you typically have much more flexibility with an RV than if you were hosting the same party at your house!
Every Super Bowl tailgating station needs a few essential items:
- A grill or portable barbecue if you plan to cook your own food
- A cooler to keep your food and drinks cold (it will still be around 75 degrees Fahrenheit in Phoenix in February)
- Cooking and serving utensils, including a spatula and tongs (and separate implements to cook vegan or vegetarian offerings)
- Tableware for serving, including plates, cups, and utensils (get compostable ones)
- Lighting arrangements, like fairy lights, lanterns, and flashlights, if you’re planning to stay out past dark
- Plasticware or paperware for any leftovers
- Sunscreen, bug spray, and bite lotion
- Chairs, tables, or picnic blankets for people to sit on
- A first aid kit and fire extinguisher (many RV rentals come with these safety items)
- Games and activities to keep everyone entertained (especially important if you have children at your event)
- Something to watch or listen to the game on, like a TV, radio, or laptop computer connected to WiFi
Some of these items can be rented from local party stores. Renting items will save you from having to buy them yourself or cart them from home – which, let’s face it, could be hundreds of miles away when you’re on an RV adventure!
Don’t Forget About Lighting
We’ve already mentioned lighting in our list of essential RV Super Bowl tailgating items above. But lighting deserves a special, more detailed mention, too.
Lighting is functional, of course, and it’s important that you can actually see what you are doing after dark. But lighting is also one of the most impressive ways to decorate your tailgating party area!
Make sure you think about how you’re going to light your space well in advance. There are a lot of different options out there. String lights, lanterns, and candles have their place in creating a fun atmosphere. If you’re hosting at an RV park or campsite, consider suspending fairy lights inside and outside the vehicle. You can also add some color by hanging them over tables or having them dangle from trees or tents.
You could also pick up football-themed string lights at a local party store or supermarket. Sure, you might not use them as much as you would generic lights throughout the year, but you know that they’ll surely delight your guests and show you made an effort!
Get Your RV Noticed With a DIY Scoreboard
Loads of people will be throwing Super Bowl tailgating parties, so if you are hoping to attract some new friends over to your parking spot, you’ve got to go the extra mile (excuse the bad RV pun…)
You could make a DIY scoreboard to spruce up an otherwise boring side of your RV. You could hang a big white sheet and pin numbers to it, or you could do something a bit smaller with a whiteboard/blackboard, markers/chalk, and magnets.
As for what you put on your scoreboard, the obvious answer is the score as the game progresses. But you can have fun with friendly side bets and competitions to identify the highest scorer, MVP, and other game factors. You could also let kids write their favorite players’ names up there or have a little drawing competition — the options are endless!

Let Everyone Know the Rules of the Tailgate Party With a Custom Sign
Whether you’re the only one hosting a party or joining a massive one with other RVers, it’s a good idea to make sure that everyone knows the tailgate rules. And since many people have been known to forget them (especially when alcohol is involved), this is something worth putting up in view of all attendees.
Creating a custom sign from a piece of cardboard, a whiteboard/blackboard, or a rented A-frame board is probably your best bet. List the rules of your tailgate, including what is and isn’t allowed, how many guests you can accommodate, and so on.
It also helps if your sign can be a visual reminder of what kind of behavior is expected during this celebration. If there will be kids at the event, mark that on the sign to remind adults how they need to behave. Likewise, if your group has already adopted specific traditions or rules around food for their parties (such as religious requirements), ensure those are written down somewhere too.
