Coachella takes place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. This is a city in the Coachella Valley of the Colorado desert. It’s about a three-hour drive from Los Angeles. The music festival is held over two weekends.
Most fans stay in nearby Palm Springs, which has an airport, lots of hotels, and a bit more going on than Indio itself. You can also camp on site with your yoga and picnic mats or open a tent at Lake Eldorado, the glamping area. We’re warning you, it gets mighty hot on-site!

There is no camping for RVs on-site at Coachella, but you can park your RV at. The nearest one is 3 miles away.

1. San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm
When you reach Palm Springs, which is the entrance of Coachella Valley, you’ll see these hillside-covering wind turbines that flank both sides of the 10. If you want to slow down, follow the ramp to the 62 and exit at Dillon Road. Then turn left for the hillside turbines or turn right and go south toward Garnet Road for the low-lying ones. You won’t believe it, but these windmills power the entire Coachella Valley. Studies show they’re even powerful enough to light a city the size of San Francisco.
2. Joshua Tree National Park
Known fondly as “J-tree” by the locals, this park lies at an ecological crossroads. You’ll find this place where the high Mojave Desert meets the low Colorado Desert. People describe the landscape as “other worldly.” There are no gushing rivers or waterfalls. Instead, you’ll find boulders and buttresses, rugged mountains, and gold mining ruins. It’s essentially miles of desert plains dotted with the oddball trees and abundant desert wildlife. But keep your eyes open for foxes, turtles, and snakes.

This stop is a colorful oasis in the desert. It took 28 years to create it, but the result is a feast for the eyes. Things to Do Around Coachella Before and After the Event
1. Cabazon Dinosaurs
We recommend checking out this creationist-themed dinosaur museum. These 100-ton brontosauruses and T. Rex sculptures once beckoned motorists (and Pee-wee Herman) to a 24-hour diner. Now, they’re in their ferocious gear, displayed at their full glory for visitors. Make sure you walk into the gift shop housed inside Dinny the Brontosaurus’s belly.
2. Coachella Valley History Museum
We suppose this place is a must-visit if you’re traveling to Coachella. After all, The Coachella Valley History Museum aims to teach all about the people, places, and times that have made the Coachella Valley the epicenter of so much in Southern California history. The site houses the historic 1909 Indio Schoolhouse and the world’s only Date Museum.
3. Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
You’ll definitely need to visit the world’s largest rotating tramcar, which travels over two-and-a-half miles along the beautiful cliffs of Chino Canyon. It transports riders to the pristine wilderness of Mt. San Jacinto State Park. Tramcars rotate very slowly during your ten-minute journey, offering picturesque and spectacular vistas of the valley floor below.
4. Desert X, Coachella Valley, California
This is more of a stopping point than a thing to do, but we think it’s worth mentioning so you understand the meaning behind Desert X . Desert X is an art installation where artists from all over the world were invited to come and create artwork that reflected the valley’s extraordinary landscape. This means as you travel down Coachella Valley, you can look out for several artists’ interpretations of the place and existing conditions.
Is Coachella FUN?
You bet it is. Coachella is load of fun, mainly because of the caliber of artists. The organizers have announced the main headliners. Alcohol is consumed away from the stages, so this differs from British music festivals in that you can’t park up with a pint and watch the live music. It is much merrier if you take advantage of an RV rental through RVnGO.
