Origins of Star Wars Day
Most coin the first time the phrase “May the 4th be with you” was recorded was all the way back on May 4, 1979. The political party of Margaret Thatcher in England placed an advertisement in the London Evening News saying “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
The phrase has been used throughout popular culture since then. However, it wasn’t until 1998 that the phrase and idea of an informal holiday was popularized. Even then, it took over 10 more years before the love of the phrase and celebration of the day would become somewhat official.
The first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Ontario, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema in 2011. Some celebratory events included a Trivia Game Show and costume contest. Celebrity judges were even present as judges for some contests. Fans, sports teams, and Disney themselves now recognize May 4th as Star Wars Day.
On May 4th, 2015, the movies were played on the International Space Station in celebration. In 2015, the carillon bells inside the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Canada played Star Wars tunes like the famous Imperial March theme. The origins of Star Wars Day date back decades, but it wasn’t until the mid-2010s that the holiday really picked up steam.
