Best Memorial Day Weekend Camping Destinations For 2023

Can’t wait to kick off summer with Memorial Day weekend?

Neither can we! As the unofficial start of summer, everyone is looking ahead in their calendars to the long weekend when we can embrace the outdoors together and celebrate the holiday as it’s meant to be. I’d say it’s well deserved, wouldn’t you?

Camping spots are already filling up at major American destinations for Memorial Day weekend, but don’t panic! We’ve made a list of the best Memorial Day weekend camping destinations in the US for 2022. While some places are well known for bringing the festivities, others are hidden gems to help you escape from the crowd this year.

Best Memorial Day Weekend Camping Destinations

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Next to Independence Day, Memorial Day weekend is one of Cape Cod’s biggest parties. By the end of May, the weather in New England stays around the upper 60s to low 70s. Memorial Day weekend itself is the unofficial beginning of summer for the region, and Cape Cod is the center of the celebration.

To mingle with the crowds, bring your RV to Hyannis and go window shopping on Main Street. With a bustling marina throughout the summer, there are options for bay tours during the day and some of the finest seafood dining in the world at night. If you’re looking to spend the day at the beach, keep driving for Wellfleet, Chatham, and Centerville.

South Walton, Florida

While most people tend to think of cities like Miami or Fort Lauderdale when it comes to Florida’s beaches, Walton County is a true hidden gem. Tucked just a few town’s over from the Alabama border, South Walton is home to some of Florida’s most incredible beaches without the Miami crowds.

Pristine white sand shoreline that stretches for miles and dazzling turquoise waters aren’t just hallmarks of a Caribbean island. They are Florida’s best kept secret, a perfect getaway from the noise of the city. South Walton is also packed with golf courses, farmer’s markets, and arcades to keep the entire family busy.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

A hub of the Grand Strand (the 60 miles of beach along the Atlantic Coast), Myrtle Beach is a one stop shop for entertainment. Its boardwalk and beachside amusement park are beloved across the generations. The white sand beach and gentle waves are dreamy. And that’s not to mention the nighttime light show on the water, or the city’s grand aquarium, or the sprawling restaurant scene downtown.

Memorial Day Weekend tends to draw in over 100,000 people to Myrtle Beach, and for good reason. In addition to all of the amazing things to do that we’ve already mentioned, Myrtle Beach has a packed schedule to celebrate the holiday. Throughout the weekend are half marathons, bike races, a Military Appreciation Parade, and Breakfast with the Butterflies at Brookgreen Gardens.

Plus, the city recognizes that the weekend may be somber in part for many people. Because of this Brookgreen Gardens also serves as a quiet escape from the crowd as it honors the holiday. Flags throughout the gardens lead guests through a vigil walk surrounded by artwork sculptures made by veterans that celebrates the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Newport, Rhode Island

The smallest state in the US was once home to the summer playground for America’s wealthiest families during the Gilded Age. The seaside city of Newport is filled to the brim with historic charm and easygoing character. Like Cape Cod, Memorial Day weekend ushers in summer in Newport— the small city truly comes alive.

Throughout the weekend, rooftop bars and outdoor patios open for brunch and cocktails in the early afternoon, and sailboats fill the harbor. Curbside Comedy shows are scheduled to raise money for charity, and art galleries open their doors in the shopping district on Thames Street. There’s a pop-up Porsche exhibit in Newport’s Car Museum, plus mouth watering seafood in the foodie walk. In between the fanfare, Newport’s famous Vanderbilt mansions (including The Breakers, Rosecliff, and Marble House) are open for tours, right along the water.

Plus, did we mention there’s a beach?

If you’re looking for an all out party for your Memorial Day weekend camping destinations, Lake of the Ozarks is second to none.

The Ozark region straddles the Southern border of Missouri and parts of Northern Arkansas. Densely wooded, there are numerous bodies of water that intersect the Ozarks. However, the famous Lake of the Ozarks is the main attraction. The state park is home to a dozen hiking trails that cross through open meadows and Ozark Caverns, which are open for guided tours. But the main event is the water and the beachfront, and there’s plenty of both.

There are over 80 miles of lake to explore in the Ozarks. The state park alone is equipped with two marinas as a jumping off point for boating and other water sports. Fishing and water skiing are also popular on the lake, with packed beaches along the shore all throughout the day and night.

The Queen of the American Lakes, the deep blue water of Lake George has plenty to offer for fun. Boating, fishing, waterskiing, swimming, and kayaking are hugely popular throughout the area. Dozens of hiking trails intersect the mountains and woods surrounding the water. Upstate New York is renowned for its incredible natural features; equal parts camping paradise and townie retreat

While there are plenty of campgrounds scattered all along the massive shoreline, the waterfront towns that call the area home keep the lake simultaneously cozy and upbeat. A trip to Lake George is incomplete without visiting the famous Adirondack Winery Tasting Room.
